Data Collection Project
Introduction
This is to prepare for research in the language field. For this, you will conduct a survey and collect the results. First, review information about the process of conducting surveys: conducting a survey.
Questions
- Which languages/dialects do you speak?
- Which one is your mother tongue?
- What is your favorite world language (for example, Spanish, French, Japanese, English, Chinese, etc.) and why?
- Where is your favorite world language best spoken (Paris etc.)?
- What is your second favorite world language?
- Finally ask the people you are interviewing what they think “language” and “dialect” and “speak a language” mean.
Directions
- Divide into groups of 4 or 5.
- Interview 5 students who are not in this class or previously in a section of this class at any time nor someone who has had any Linguistics class.
- After all the data has been collected, the responses should be organized according to the responses given.
- Synthesize the information and turn in your group report.
- For each row of data in the spreadsheet, have a field to indicate who collected that row of data and the date collected.
- Be prepared to discuss your results as a group.
After discussing the results, you will write a reflection to reflect on what you have learned from this exercise and what questions you thought of during this assignment. An answer of “no additional questions” will result in a deduction of the critical thinking score. Be sure to take notes of your participation and learning during this assignment to help write the reflection. The reflection will be divided into three sections: methodology, results, and discussion. The discussion should be at least 1 page and 300 words. The rubric from reflection 1 will be used to grade this assignment as well. The assignment will be turned in individually on Turnitin.com. The idea is for you to have a chance to discuss the results and reflect on the assignment in class before finishing the reflection.
